SPARTAK MOSCOW MAINTAINED ITS PERFECT START TO THE NEW CAMPAIGN WITH AN ENTERTAINING NIL DRAW WITH RUBIN KAZAN

Spartak Moscow maintained its perfect start to the new campaign with an entertaining nil draw with Rubin Kazan, held at Lokomotiv Stadium due to the World Athletics Championships at Luzhniki, in match-day five of the Sogaz Championship of Russia. With the result the Red-Whites share the top of the table with CSKA ahead of this weeks Europa League test against St. Gallen on 22 August.

With new man Lucas Barrios waiting in the wings, Spartak manager Valeriy Karpin deployed his forces in a 4-5-1 formation, making three changes to his most recent line-up as he summoned Yevgeni Makeyev, Yura Movsisyan and Aras Özbiliz for Aiden McGeady, Pavel Yakovlev and Emmanuel Emenike.

The early stages of the contest saw the visitors more assertive but by mid-way of the half traffic had decidedly turned in Spartak’s favour with Denis Glushakov narrowly missing breaking the deadlock at the twenty-second minute with an effort from distance that whisked off the inside of the right post before rolling across the goalmouth to safety. The complexion of play continued through the break with the Red-Whites continuing to probe but with Rubin settled into their defending stances chances on goal dissipated.

At the re-start Mr. Karpin called upon Pavel Yakovlev for Yevgeni Makeev as he searched for a way through the staunch defending of the visitors. Wasting little time, Spartak pushed forward clearly as the aggressor but as with the opening half the final third proving rough going. Four minutes past the hour a quick counter saw the always dangerous José Manuel Jurado press into left side of the area but the twenty-seven year old Spaniards effort ratcheted off the cross bar to the disappointment of the faithful. Shortly thereafter Yura Movsisyan carved over a splendid chance on the ride side of the early before a last ditch block snuffed out his crossing effort. In search of the much needed goal the Spartak tactician added Diniyar Bilyaletdinov for Aras Özbiliz eight minutes past the hour with Lucas Barrios making his debut, for Yura Movsisyan, shortly thereafter but still the final touch proved illusive. Play continued a fast, entertaining pact but chances closed just as quickly as they opened as the contest headed to three minutes of added time. Suddenly Rubin sparked to life in the attacking front, to which Rafael Carioca’s stunning block of Iván Marcano’s goal bound effort at the back post averted a shock late goal by the visitors. Following a final advance the whistle sounded with the Red-Whites sharing the spoils in a nil draw.
